Who would have ever guessed that looking at breasts could be so boring?

"The Girl Next Door" is disguised as a sort of "coming of age" film involving a teenager who has a porn star move in next door...they fall for each other...and, of course, everybody ends up with moral dilemmas and chaos reigns. <yawn>

Elisha Cuthbert plays the porn star with all the emotional depth of, well, a porn star. So, I guess it works on a certain level. The challenge is, of course, that much of this has been done before and while I wouldn't exactly call this film a retread it's far from fresh. Emile Hirsch plays the teen in question, and while he has a nice enthusiasm it just sort of feels like an empty role.

I did notice Timothy Bottoms in a smaller role...that was kind of interesting...however, even the Director's Cut is remarkably disappointing. When all else fails, this sort of film is supposed to fall back on the T&A...it's incredibly lacking here. So, even being shallow I find myself disappointed.

Below average script, cute female, moderately interesting performances and a decent energy elevate this film a touch but it's basically a goldfish in the sea of teen films.

TC Candler's Comment

Yep... There is only one reason anyone should watch this film... To see Elisha Cuthbert prance her jaw-dropping body around in about 30 different provocative outfits while flashing heavenly smiles at the camera.  The film itself is a total rip-off of "Risky Business", but without the subtle wit of that 1983 classic.
