It found a voice...now, it needs a body. |

The
problem with Japanese anime, at least for me, is that it often comes
across as cheap exploitation rather than art. "Akira" and "Princess
Mononoke" are the two exceptions I can think of off the top of my
head. Those were psychological, creative, and real films in their own
right.
"Ghost in the Shell" is an extremely popular film amongst anime fans,
but a total bore for me. The action is repetitive and unoriginal. The
characters are cliche'd. The humor is stale. The original Japanese
voice acting is corny and the dubbing is even worse. "Ghost in the
Shell" is filled with nudity and violence, little else.
I would give you a brief plot synopsis if I understood what the hell
was going on, but I didn't, so no plot synopsis. Sorry. It had
something to do with a robot assassin who looks like a beautiful woman
(all the more reason to fight naked most of the time) and her attempts
to hack into another robot and uncover a conspiracy...what the?
I feel wrong failing this, because I grew numb to it's problems after
awhile and began to enjoy the gorgeous animation and only that. A
great sense of style is what this film has going for it.
Hence, a C- for substance, B for style. C+
overall. |
