Not enough thrills for a thriller...
Although the film looks fantastic and does a
good job of mixing finite historical accuracy
with extravagant waves of ingenious
conjecture... 'From Hell' lacks a certain
excitement or tension that is necessary for a
thriller. The ending did make up for a
lackluster plot because I appreciated the way
the Hughes Brothers found a way to surprise
me... I almost expected the events to continue
in the documentary-like ABC fashion that truly
occurred back in the fall of 1888. All in all I
recommend the movie because it is a cinematic
success even though it lacks an inventive twist
on the oft told tale.
Depp is a little flat in his role and Graham,
even though she looks the part, failed to win me
over as the unfortunate prostitute whose
seemingly grisly fate approaches ever near.
The streets of the Whitechapel district come to
life in a visceral way. The dank and mysterious
alleyways that intersect the cobblestone streets
are the perfect location for the most notorious
killing spree in history. This film is full of
style, flare, and adds a little suspense and
doom!
