Miserable manipulation...
The film is just so morose and dark and heavy
and miserable, that it collapses under the
collective weight. The film is reasonably well
crafted, and I found the bashing of small-town,
Midwestern, religious fanaticism to be an
interesting and brave subject... but I could
never enjoy watching a film like this because it
is mired in overwhelming misery. How could
anyone enjoy that? And the big surprise twist at
the end is all too gimmicky and overt. This is a
poor debut film from actor turned director Bill
Paxton.
