Richard Propes' Review

B

I loved "The Fisher King" mainly because of the performances of Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges. For me, the best way to express my view is that the sum doesn't equal the parts. Director Terry Gilliam drew out of Williams a performance I never expected...dramatic, funny, sad and pretty well controlled. Jeff Bridges did a nice job as a wild disc jockey who goes on a rampage that somehow ends awry. In seeking redemption, his path crosses Robin Williams. It's a wonderful performance, and he is supported marvelously by Mercedes Ruehl. If you look, you'll also see performances by Kathy Najimy, Harry Shearer and David Hyde Pierce. My main beef with the film lies in its effort to cover too much ground, which begins to make everything convoluted by the end of the film. I don't mind a film where I have to watch it more than once to get it...in a way, I think that's a good thing. I can't help but think, though, that either the director or the screenwriter could have found a way to tidy it up a bit. It's a minor beef, hence my rating of an A-, because I love this film.

TC Candler's Comment

Maybe I need to see this film again.  Everyone I know seems to like or love it.  I suppose I was just in a bad mood that day.  I will try it again sometime soon to see if my opinion is different.
