This Ride Will Be The Death Of You |

"Final
Destination 3" is one of the funniest films of 2006.
I normally don't laugh at horror films (and detest those that do), but
call me a hypocrite and verbally crucify me...I don't care. This was
one of the funniest films I have ever seen.
I skipped "Final Destination 2" and vaguely remember "Final
Destination," so I walked into the theater expecting some gore, cheap
shocks and, of course, some blatant nudity. I received all three
during my time watching the movie, but I also received a lesson in
comedy.
For those of you unfamiliar with the premise of the films, here's a
basic set-up. This applies for all of the films:
We meet teenage cast.
They are doing something that seems simple enough (boarding a plane,
etc.)
One teen has premonition of horrible accident.
They stop doing what they are doing.
Accident happens.
Teens who stopped are killed off in increasingly bizarre fashions.
"Increasingly bizarre." I really mean this. In horror films, it seems
like each film tries to out-do the others in terms of gore and deaths.
"Final Destination 3" tries to be bloody and shocking, but the deaths
are so outrageous and ironic, so strangely staged and unbelievable,
that they stop being scary and start being funny.
(MINOR SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT)
Take, for example, the sequence in a weight room. The two smart teens
are attempting to rescue another from his imminent death. He blows
them off and performs a huge monologue about how he'll beat death.
Everyone in the locker room starts to scream and yell with him. His
head is then crushed by weights as his speech climaxes.
This may not sound very humorous in print, but when you take into
account the lousy acting, overly dramatic writing and the reactions of
everyone in the scene, this becomes a wonderful piece of dark
comedy...although it was never intended to be.
Because I had to much fun laughing at this movie, and because it's too
campy to truly hate, I'm going to just BARELY not give this one a
recommendation. I do, however, suggest it as a decent party film. You
and your friends will have more fun than a barrel of monkeys. |

TC Candler's Comment
I must say
that I did enjoy the tanning bed sequence with
Chelan Simmons and Crystal Lowe... but, as a
whole, the third in this series did not live up
to the entertainment value of the first two.
Then again... It ain't that bad either.
