With a
stellar script by Cameron Crowe, relaxed
directing by Amy Heckerling and captivating
performances by Sean Penn, Judge Reinhold,
Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ray
Walston "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" remains
one of the most entertaining films to come out
of my high school days.
Featuring the 2nd film appearance by Penn, and
first starring role, "Fast Times" is a fun
account of high school with witty dialogue and a
unique balance of offbeat situations, real life
issues and high school humor. It's one of the
first films to take a witty, insightful look at
high school life and it remains one of the best
over 20 years later.
The film also features an early performance from
Eric Stoltz and some interesting bit players
including Pam Springsteen (Bruce's sister),
Nicolas Cage, Forrest Whitaker, Nancy Wilson
(from "Heart")and Martin Brest (yes, it's
true...the guy who directed "Gigli" is makes an
appearance here).
Everything about this film seems to
work...credit largely goes to the Crowe/Heckerling
combination...they've created a perfect film
about life in high school. It's moving, funny,
authentic and humiliating. Now, that's high
school.
