I gotsta have me some Natalie Portman...
I saw this film online. A few days ago, while
visiting the single best celebrity fan site on
the internet (www.natalieportman.com), I saw a
link to what I presumed was a 10 minute short
about the fanaticism prevalent in American
society today. Our obsession with celebrity is
fascinating in and of itself.
This film chooses Natalie Portman fans as the
target for a sometimes fond and sometimes
cynical depiction.
What is also very unique about this film is that
it is part fiction and part documentary. The
main thread of the film is about a young man,
still living with his parents, who is on a cross
country journey to meet Natalie. That road trip
is interspersed with other 'sit-down' interviews
with Natalie fans of varying fervor.
There are funny moments, sad moments, scary
moments and poignant moments in this movie...
perhaps the only weakness of the film is that it
is haphazard in its tone and direction.
Clearly, this is a low budget / slightly
amateurish production. The fiction part of this
film is also often laden with 'rookie' acting.
"Fandom" is not always smooth... but it is
almost always fascinating and entertaining.
The film is available online, runs about 90
minutes, and is well worth the watch. It gives a
little insight into the world of obsession and
'fandom' for today's celebs.
