Madonna... Andrea Corr called... She wants her
song back!
I liked the daring of the film. The songs are
memorable (most notably 'Another Suitcase in
Another Hall' & 'I'd Be Surprisingly Good for
You') and the visuals are spectacular. The only
question to raise is the somewhat shaky casting
of the two leads. Madonna's ego splashes off the
screen with every shot... and frankly, I think
she looks like a haggard old witch in this film.
She even had the gall to steal one of the
aforementioned songs from another character
played by Andrea Corr, a singer who actually
possesses a great voice, just so she could have
more screen time. We are all painfully aware
that Madonna's voice is pretty thin and
abrasive... she is primarily a studio creation
that can churn out pop hits with 'controversial'
themes and new looks on a weekly basis. Madonna
is not really suited to sing lengthy and
vocal-heavy 'musical' numbers. I think this film
may have approached greatness with other actors
and a more musical director. As it stands, it is
a brave attempt that merits a mild
recommendation based solely on the fact that it
isn't a run-of-the-mill Hollywood biopic.
