What was my first clue that "Epic Movie," the spin-off from the "Scary
Movie" and "Date Movie" team was going to completely suck? |
| |
No, silly. It wasn't
just that it actually did come from the team of Jason Friedberg and
Aaron Seltzer.
Kal Penn?
Hmmm. Tempting. He did star, after all, in "Van Wilder 2" (and, for
that matter the original "Van Wilder"). Still, no, he can
occasionally be funny.
Darrell Hammond? Also tempting. He's really pretty much stunk up the
cinema since his SNL days. Still, he can be awfully funny. So, no,
it's not him either.
Jennifer Coolidge? Nope. She's actually just about the best part of
"Epic Movie."
Wait, Crispin Glover? Nah, not at all. While he's largely wasted
here, I love Glover!
Tired of guessing yet?
Think Razzie.
No, silly. Not Uwe Boll.
Carmen Electra.
As soon as I saw Electra's name listed with "Epic Movie" I knew I
was in for a very long and not so entertaining film.
Surprisingly, while "Date Movie" was far from entertaining I
actually enjoyed moments of the film and, quite honestly, have long
had a serious crush on Alyson Hannigan. So, in my eyes she made the
entire film completely tolerable.
"Epic Movie" is nonsensical from its very beginning. For example,
"Epic Movie" is not, in fact, a spoof of epic movies. It is, in
fact, a spoof of blockbuster movies.
Perhaps the filmmakers didn't know the difference?
Or, I suppose they just couldn't spell the word blockbuster?
Generally, "Epic Movie" follows the storyline of "Chronicles of
Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe," with spoofs of such
films as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "The Da Vinci Code,"
"Snakes on a Plane," "Nacho Libre" and a few others thrown in.
Please note...only "Narnia" even remotely resembles an epic film and
only "Narnia" and "Da Vinci" could be considered blockbusters.
Why not just call it "Movie Movie?"
It would be easy to keep ripping on a film that is so woefully
inadequate. The reality is that Seltzer and Friedberg, who also
co-scripted the original "Scary Movie" with the Wayans Brothers,
have created a film that is even worse than not funny...it's boring.
Cast members who had remarkable potential, such as Glover as Willy
Wonka and David Carradine as a museum curator, are sadly ineffective
and the presence of the likes of Electra and Tony Cox do nothing to
help the situation.
There's no need to turn this review into an epic review...and lord
knows I don't want to call it something it's not. Suffice it to say
that "Epic Movie" is a horridly scripted, pathetically realized film
that begs an end to a tired, tired film series.
At a mere 86 minutes, the only thing positive I can say about "Epic
Movie" is that it is, quite mercifully, only epic in its remarkable
lack of entertainment value. |
