Anthony
is one of the greatest actors who has ever lived. Alec Baldwin is one
of the most competent (if not average) actors who has ever lived. Bart
the Bear is arguably the best trained bear that is not computer
generated to ever star in many films (although the category of best
trained bear that is not computer generated is rather "bear," pun
intended). Put them together and you have: a disappointing and
mediocre thriller that should have been much, much better.
Our heroes are flying over the wilderness when a flock of birds causes
their plane to crash. Soon, the third member of the party is devoured
by a nasty, flesh eating bear (played by Bart). So the two men must
team together to overcome their obstacles, despite the fact that they
don't get along.
You've seen it all before. The only truly original aspect is Hopkins,
who continues to amaze. Baldwin does his job, but never impresses. The
bear attacks are pretty gory and mildly thrilling, but never
suspenseful. The scenes between them are filler as we wait for the
bear to move in. What takes suspense away is that it's pretty obvious
that both characters will survive pretty deep into the film.
"The Edge" goes on ridiculously long. After the main plot is solved,
it breaks into a ludicrous plot that is impossible to believe and
contrived as can be. I'd say this film is a skip unless you really
want to see Hopkins and a well trained bear face off in a river. |
