TC Candler's Review

B

If you don't have a huge crush on Marguerite Moreau after having watched "Easy", then I will personally send you a check in the amount you paid to rent the DVD.

I must confess, that despite my B grade, I was slightly disappointed with this film. I fully expected it to be an independent gem along the lines of "Garden State". It had played to delighted audiences at film festivals all across the country. But despite the rave reviews, the film had a hard time getting distribution.

I think I know why... the narrative is very choppy and ever so slightly manipulative. Okay, I am being kind... it is very manipulative. It sometimes feels like an exercise in Screenwriting 101.

However, all that said, I still really liked the movie, due in no small part to the lovely, star-in-the-making, Moreau. If she isn't a superstar in the next 5 years, I will eat my laptop. I think I could watch this girl sleeping for two hours and be utterly enthralled.

Moreau plays Jamie Harris, an overly flirtatious and promiscuous young woman who seems to have no luck with men. The opening montage of voicemail messages lets us know that every guy she seems to fall for, dumps her without remorse. Now, of course, once we get a glimpse of Moreau, it is hard to buy the premise that this girl can't get a steady boyfriend. You just have roll your eyes, say "Yeah Right!" and move on with the story.

Then the film gambles with a few romantic comedy clichés. The gay next door neighbor... the married sister... and two seemingly nice guys that our heroine has to choose from. Throw in a few red-herrings, a major dramatic hindrance to true love, and an ending that reminds us of any Meg Ryan movie... and you have "Easy".

I think almost everyone will like this film. I am sure that everyone and their uncle will like Marguerite Moreau. But the film is a little too manipulative and the story lacks a consistent enough tone to be deserving of an A grade.
