The robbery should have taken 10 minutes...

A dramatic & often wonderful film. Al Pacino, as always, delivers a knockout performance in this exciting film based on a true incident.

Pacino is a gay man who decides to rob a bank to pay for his lover's sex change operation. Things go terribly wrong, and soon, he and his fellow robber (John Cazale) are trapped in the bank, and surrounded by the cops.

There is tension, action, and a real sense of purpose. The late, overlooked Cazale is wonderful in his role, matching even Pacino in intensity. Also, very sensitive. Our protagonists are not bad people, but good people forced to do a terrible thing. It toys with our minds: who are the heroes? These robbers? Or the city's finest?

TC Candler's Comment

One of the 25 best films made in the 1970's.

Richard Propes' Comment

There's a wonderful supporting cast here, but this film is clearly Al Pacino's tour de force. This film featured the best of both director Sidney Lumet and Pacino. Based on a true story, the film is paced beautifully with a controlled, intense performance by Pacino. Why do I keep saying Pacino? Clearly, this is his film.
