Richard Propes' Review

B+

A stellar cast elevates this coming of age film from Barry Levinson into an entertaining, funny and sweet film that follows the lives of a group of young men in 1959 Baltimore.

This 1982 film features early performances by the likes of Steve Guttenberg, Kevin Bacon, Daniel Stern, Mickey Rourke, Timothy Daley, Ellen Barkin and Paul Reiser. What an incredibly diverse yet entertaining cast, and they work together as a seamless ensemble.

This is a quiet film...a slice of American life, with touching and thought-provoking dialogue and a wonderful performance from Mickey Rourke. In this film, Levinson shows us all his writing and directing strengths. "Diner" has an intelligent script, excellent performances, beautiful cinematography and subtle yet perfect technical features. I don't quite consider this an "outstanding" film, yet I have to say that everything about this film works for me. It's definitely one of those films I watch everytime I see it on late night television.
