I love
"Dennis the Menace," but was stunningly bored by
this film version. Walter Matthau was a natural
to play Mr. Wilson, but he's given almost no
range to play here. The same is true for Joan
Plowright as Mrs. Wilson, and Lea Thompson and
Robert Stanton as Dennis' parents. It's almost
funny how many of these cartoonish parental
types that Lea Thompson has played. She does add
a certain spark to the role, so I can see why
she's gotten the roles. Mason Gamble, as Dennis,
is a major problem. Basically, his performance
is a caricature of Dennis that never gets any
life of its own. That's sad, as there are so
many dimensions that could have been explored
with this role. There's also a brief appearance
by Natasha Lyonne, as Polly. Only diehard
"Dennis the Menace" fans will enjoy this film,
and even that's pushing it.
