"Deadline" is
one of 2004's most powerful documentaries in
detailing the incredible flaws in the Illinois
justice system, especially concerning the use of
capital punishment.
The film details several cases investigated by
college students in which individuals on Death
Row are found to be innocent of the crimes for
which they were committed. Governor Ryan was
left to decide the fate of over 150 Death Row
inmates, and his decisions are both
inspirational and controversial.
This film uses powerful interviews, case
studies, press conferences and archive data to
present a powerful and effective documentary on
a mind-bogglingly flawed and discriminatory
judicial system.
While production values bog this film down a
bit, and it relies a bit much on archive data, I
still consider this one of the most powerful and
important documentaries of 2004.
The hearings shared are deeply emotional and
troubling, but the film offers a rare and
insightful look into the judicial and political
systems.
While not perfect, I HIGHLY recommend
"Deadline."
