"When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth."

What a creepy line! At least I think so. Sadly, it's the only truly creepy thing about this sequel to "Night of the Living Dead." The first one was low budget and black and white. It was suspenseful, and very frightening.

Now that the film is in color, it has lost a considerable amount of punch. The zombie epidemic introduced in "Night" has only gotten worse. Two SWAT officers and their friends take refuge in a shopping mall while the undead slaughter the population around them.

"Dawn of the Dead" starts out as a trashy gore film, filled with disembowelments, decapitations, you name it. No substance, quite unlike "Night," which was very well made and not trashy at all. Things change about 30 minutes into the film, where the suspense raises considerably, and gore is pushed on the back burner. It's still quite gory, but a decent amount of substance is added onto it.

The acting is very bad, but the makeup effects are a strange sight to behold: they look cheesy, and at the same time gruesome and gut churning.

You will like this film if: you like gory horror films, love zombies, like disturbing makeup, have always wanted to see the kookiness of zombies riding an escalator, or if you have ever wanted to see a zombie that looks frighteningly similar to Gandhi!

Richard Propes' Comment

Jacob nails it on this one. There's no way I could ever put this film in the "A" range, but it's a classic of horror and one of the most amazing to watch. The remake may have the advantage in production values, but I'll take this one anyday.
