I
tried desperately to enjoy this film, and I have
no doubt it will have fans out there.
Essentially, it is a sort of "horrorish" story
about a "Darkhunter," one who hunts down souls
after someone has died that God has apparently
forgotten to retrieve. Of course, being a
moderate theologian this begs the question...how
does a "perfect" deity "forget?" But, I digress.
Apparently, it happens. AND, it is the job of a
"Darkhunter" to retrieve these souls before "the
other side" finds out and goes after them.
It's actually an intriguing concept for film,
but one that is disappointingly realized. This
is actually a film that in the first few minutes
I thought to myself "I'm going to enjoy this."
Yet, as time went on I found myself enjoying it
less and less and less.
The film is written and directed by Johannes
Roberts...who I'd give credit for a jumbled, but
somewhat intriguing script but remarkably
unfocused direction. Additionally, the film
stars Dominique Pinon...who basically screams
through the entire film...okay, not quite
literally...but, it sure feels that way.
The film also stars Jeff Fahey and Dan Van Husen
(who speaks in subtitles). There's some creepy
and effective cinematography here, and some
unique scenes...yet, the editing is often
ineffective. Additionally, the supporting
performances almost uniformly leave a lot to be
desired.
The special effects in this film are rather
amateurish, and I found the sound design to be
grossly inadequate almost to the point of an
echo at times.
So, the film wins a few style points...loses
points in almost every other area. This 2004
example of "British Horror" is disappointing.
