I was
momentarily tempted to give this film a D-. It
would have been merciful...sympathy, perhaps,
for this is one of the worst...truly worst
horror films I have ever seen. I watched this
film recently only because it was in the wrong
DVD box...I was trying to rent "The R.M." and
got this film instead. Because it was nearly
midnight, I decided to give this film a shot.
You know those films you watch, on occasion,
where you get to the end and think to yourself
"That's two hours of my life I can never get
back?" This is such a film. It has a 1.6 rating
on IMDB, and one viewer commented that the DVD
packaging is more frightening than the film.
Sadly, they are right.
The film is written and directed by Paul Moore.
If he has a SAG card or a Directors Guild card
or a Writers card...they should all be taken
away to ensure he never creates crap like this
again. The film tells the story of a young man
who inherits a West Virginia farm. He, of
course, decides to go visit the farm to
determine whether or not he will keep it. He
takes his friends, including a trendy lesbian
couple and an interracial couple. I am reminded
of the scene from "Not Another Teen Movie" where
the "funny" black guy role is noted...here we
have yet another "Funny" black guy role...of
course, unintentionally, most of these roles are
funny. Anyway, they are all visited by the
spirits of drifters that his great grandfather
killed and used as scarecrows. So, of course,
the "scary creatures" are scarecrows. The only
problem is...they aren't scary. They aren't
intimidating...they aren't anything other than
pathetic and funny. While this is obviously a
low-budget film, the scarecrows are pathetically
low-budget. I can't help but think that if you
can't create something frightening for a horror
film why make a horror film.
Only one performer had any acting credits other
than this film...that was Jeannie Cheek, as
Darcy. Uniformly, this is one of the worst
ensembles I've ever seen. Truly, Acting 101
produces better talent than seen here. Did you
know that you can scream in horror and maintain
a monotone? I didn't know it either.
The highlight of this film, and I say this with
my most shallow face on...is the skinny dipping
scene. All the performers here are
attractive...and the scene has no horror
whatsoever. It is an extended skinny-dipping
scene...It is not particularly well done, has no
significance, no humor...nothing to offer...but,
it is the highlight of this film.
Camerawork is shoddy at best, and parts of the
film seem to have an orange tint to
them...basically, this is a B movie...fans of
really bad horror films may find this amusing,
but there is truly no other reason to rent this
film. It has no cinematic value. period.
