Reeks of cool...
With shades of David
Mamet movies like 'Heist' & 'House of Games'
coupled with elements from 'Ocean's Eleven' &
suspenseful film-noirs from bygone eras,
'Confidence' is a shining example of stylish
filmmaking with a heavy neglect for character
development. The film looks great and feels cool
but, towards the end, you can't help but realize
that you don't give a damn about these people.
So even though most of you will have a good time
at the theatre with this con game thriller, I
don't think many will love it and it may not
hold up as the years go by.
Ed Burns & Rachel Weisz are perfectly cast as
the handsome and sexy leads with conniving
minds. They both look like stars from the 1930's
& 40's. Just watching their interactions is
worth the price of admission alone. Hoffman
delivers an energetic turn as the filthy kingpin
who bankrolls the heist. He steals a few of the
scenes he is in even though he overdoes it a
little.
I can't really fault a film like this... it's
shallow and silly fun. The good thing is that
all involved are aware of that and they have fun
with it. It's exciting, it looks fantastic and
it reeks of cool. Nuff said!

"Confidence"
tries desperately to be cool, but only
occasionally hits the mark. Dustin Hoffman
offers a rare histrionic performance, and Ed
Burns is doing yet another variation of himself.
Rachel Weisz is, fortunately, a shining light
here and the film's cinematography is
exceptional.
