I can't tell
you how tempted I was to start off this review
by saying "Marlee Matlin was just not convincing
as a young deaf woman." Alas, even my sense of
humor won't allow me to go there! Actually, this
is a film I respect more than I enjoy. It's a
well done film that should have been a brilliant
film. As you probably know, Matlin did take home
the Oscar for this role and deservedly so.
Still, there were dimensions of her character
left unexplored. I'm unsure whether or not to
blame the direction of Randa Haines or Matlin.
While she and co-star William Hurt had a nice
chemistry, in some ways it felt like the
filmmaker spent more time trying to communicate
language than trying to develop characters. This
film is another example of a successful move
from Broadway stage to film.
