I found
myself incredibly disappointed by "Calendar
Girls," and wondering what all the fuss was
about. The script, by Tim Firth and Juliette
Towhidi, is overwritten and needlessly
dramatic...the performances, including the
wondrous likes of Helen Mirren and Julie Walters
are almost all dramatic only in the spoken
sense. That is, it almost felt like each
character wanted to stress that "we are making a
great film with an important message."
Unfortunately, I found myself frightfully bored
throughout much of the film, and unimpressed
with any of the performances. The film is
semi-based on a true story, but seems to play
more like a cable movie than a feature film
release. Mirren is probably the strongest here,
but I've seen her so much better so many times.
I suppose it was the novelty of this film that
caught the fancy of the public, but with a more
solidly written script, less chaotic in tone and
actresses who relaxed more into their roles this
film would have been infinitely more enjoyable.
I've certainly heard from many folks who enjoyed
this film, so I'm hesitant to not recommend it.
So, I'll simply say that while the film doesn't
work for me...if it sounds appealing to you,
grab it as a rental and give it a try.
