Richard Propes' Review

B+

I'll be the first to admit that I enjoy Jim Carrey's serious side. In fact, I first experienced Carrey in a television movie of a dramatic nature and was quite impressed. This film allowed Carrey to express his dramatic, melodramatic and humorous sides in a multi-faceted role countering Matthew Broderick. As directed by Ben Stiller, this film is a tour-de-force for Carrey...a film with touches of incredible sadness and moments of absolute hilarity. It features supporting performances by the likes of Stiller himself, Jack Black, George Segal, Janeane Garofalo, Eric Roberts, Andy Dick and Owen Wilson. This film is NOT a must see for Carrey fans...it is, in fact, quite different from his usual comic fare. Yet, fans of rich, dark comedy will be rewarded with an evening of laughter and tears and a career changing performance by Carrey.

TC Candler's Comment

The first time I saw this movie, I hated it!  But after having run across it a number of times on cable... the darn thing has grown on me.  It is far better than I first thought.  It now ranks as one of those silly comedies that I can watch whenever it comes on... I never get tired of it.
