Do you ever
have those movies that you just love to
watch...despite knowing they're not that well
made, they have multiple flaws and sometimes
they're just downright lame? For me, "Bubble
Boy" is such a film. Perhaps it was growing up
with a chronic illness...perhaps it was
identifying with having the "ultra religous"
mother...I don't really know why, but I just
really enjoy this film immensely. Yes, I'll even
admit it gets to me emotionally even after the
third viewing. So, obviously I have a connection
with this film. I'm also a huge Swoosie Kurtz
fan (Swoosie was even my nickname in high
school, go figure!) and she's just clearly
having fun with the role of the ultra religious
mother. Jake Gyllenhaal also adds depth to a
character here that could have been nothing but
a joke. Marley Shelton is cute, and has a
certain look in here eyes that conveys solid
emotions...yet, I never quite bought the
chemistry with Jimmy. Verne Troyer does a nice
turn here as Dr. Phreak, and the rest of the
cast was competent if not really
distinguishable. This film could possibly be
offensive to some as it clearly pokes fun at a
variety of cultural groups. It's lighthearted,
though, and shouldn't cause any major problems.
The direction by Blair Hayes is a bit choppy,
but I liked the balance of humor with scenes of
tenderness. The script is ridiculous, but that's
part of the fun. Overall, I find this a silly,
touching film that works better on me than it
will on most.

The only
reason to watch this film is the lovely Marley
Shelton.
