Back to School for Adam Sandler... |
| |
Adam Sandler is like
the stupid class clown: you groan every time you see him coming, but
you laugh uproariously ever time he makes a joke.
"Billy Madison" is his first big film, and while it is by no means a
masterpiece, I laughed throughout it. When I finished, I felt stupid
for laughing, so, a few days later, I watched it again to see if it
was as stupid as my afterthoughts were. Once again, I laughed so hard
I cried, but I felt even dumber afterward.
It's worth watching, but you'll hate yourself in the morning.
Besides, I can't stop singing his stupid song: "Back to school, back
to school, to prove dadda I'm not a fool. I've got my lunch packed up,
my shoes tied tight, I hope I don't get in a fight...Back to
school...back to school... |

I admit
it. Adam Sandler is a guilty pleasure for me.
Long before he started getting critical acclaim
in "Punch-Drunk Love," I've seen something in
Sandler's performances that is evident in
abundance here. "Billy Madison" is a funny,
sweet and well-acted film with a good heart and
a positive message. One reason I seem to like
both Sandler and Schneider is their dedication
to putting positive messages, empowering
messages and accepting messages in their films.
To this day, the scene of Sandler bailing out
the kid who wets his pants brings a tear to my
eye. It's a simple, kind gesture that is so
quietly played off in the film that I remain in
awe of it.
