This
film just played Indianapolis in one of our two
arthouse theatres...It's a remarkable film, and
may end up moving up to a solid "A" in my
rating. Directed by Costa-Gavras (he also
co-wrote it), this film is the powerful
portrayal of an SS officer who tries to inform
the Pope of Jews being sent to concentration
camps. This film doesn't use graphic video or
violence to send chills...instead, it uses
dialogue and frightening depictions of human
nature. In many ways, it displays the "business"
side of Nazi Germany with believable, yet
frightening imagery. The cast is entirely
foreign, and universally good. There are some
historical concerns within the context of the
film, especially in the essential "blaming" of
the Pope for many of the atrocities that
occurred. I, not being a historian or present
during this time, cannot and would not venture
to state an opinion on such a powerful issue.
These concerns aside, this is a powerful film
with a unique look at one of the most
devastating parts of human history.
