TC Candler's Review

B-

Hey, Kate Hudson!  Meg Ryan called... she wants her image back!

I'll be the first to admit that I like Kate Hudson in virtually everything she does. Goldie Hawn's daughter can do no wrong in my book. I smile the instant she appears on screen.

In this film, which chronicles the dual love stories of a writer and his transcriber & also the fictional couple in the book that he is writing, Hudson's luminous charisma does just enough to single-handedly elevate this movie to a recommendable plateau.

Unfortunately, through no fault of her own, she has very little chemistry with the male lead, played flatly by Luke Wilson. Wilson is by nature a deadpan actor... he comes across as unenthused in almost every role he plays. That's not such a bad thing in some movies, but it is a huge flaw in a romantic comedy. He is a poor choice to star opposite Miss Hudson.

Even so, I think most people will be able to appreciate this cute date movie, but it won't become another romantic classic, like 'When Harry Met Sally', for director Rob Reiner.

Richard Propes' Comment

TC is on the money with this one, but I have to throw in the fact that Hudson is making some downright poor choices these days in her films. You can only carry that wonderful smile so far, and it doesn't stretch here. Wilson is starting to stretch a bit as an actor, but he's definitely not appropriately cast here. This film has a few entertaining moments, and I certainly can imagine much worse for a lazy Saturday date flick. There's simply no way on Earth I'd ever find myself recommending this film. I suppose it does say a lot for Hudson that a romantic comedy without chemistry can still manage to garner a "C" from me. B for Hudson, D for Wilson. C overall.
