I could've used a little more Walken?

This is a slow film that lacks energy. It looks beautiful but that isn't enough! The story is somewhat based on truth and held my attention throughout, but I never felt anything for our heroine... she is slightly unsympathetic.

Hilary Swank delivers another solid performance.  We have come to expect good work from her.  And the production design is worthy of note... the film felt authentic.  But I doubt your emotions will be tapped in the way the filmmakers were hoping.  I was ho-humming my way through the second half of the film.

"The Affair of the Necklace" will appeal to Merchant Ivory fans, but really fails to engage the audience emotionally.  If it shows up on cable some time, it may be worth a look but I wouldn't go out of your way for it.

Richard Propes' Comment

This post-Oscar film for Hilary Swank practically fits the definition of mediocrity. On only a few occasions have I been tempted to not finish a film, but I found myself yawning incessantly during this film. As TC notes, the film features solid production design and a reasonable enough performance by Swank...but it all seems to add up to nothing. I didn't care about the characters, and I never felt like this apathy was supposed to be my response. I suppose I'd have to call this film a "So what?" film.
