| Despite his penchant for
gleefully watching all the worst films of each and every year, there is
very little to critique about this crazy dude. Some, including
himself, would argue that seeing all the 'Razzie' contenders makes it
easier to appreciate and recognize all the wonderful films we get to
see. Fair enough. I think Richard has 48 hours in his days, 8
days in his weeks, 13 months in his years and an endless supply of
patience. He never seems to stop working. He is a tireless
writer who could probably churn out 500 reviews a year... if they made
that many films.
His writing style is friendly and casual, literally inviting the
reader along to share his experience of any particular film. All
too often, critics keep an audience at arms length, never wanting to
appear emotionally vulnerable. Richard Propes avoids that gap and
becomes a trusted critic to virtually everyone who reads him.
We share similar tastes, Richard and I. However, even when we
vehemently disagree on the quality of a film, I still find it easy to
understand his reasoning. At no point do I ever feel he is being
unfair or grandiose or overstated in order to make a point.
I think as you read more of Richard Propes' reviews, you will come to
recognize his fairness and balance. He is measured and thoughtful,
never allowing his emotions to get in the way but still allowing them to
shine through.
He is a great critic and an even better person. His charity and
generosity knows no bounds and I highly recommend that you head on over
to his website, , which does more good for those in
need than you can possibly imagine.
You won't find a more honest critic than Richard. I am proud
and honored to have him as a friend and colleague on
IndependentCritics.com - I only hope he doesn't invite me to see "Police
Academy 9" or "Speed 3: Lose Control".
The photo of Philip Seymour Hoffman is
used above because on this site, rather than using our own ugly mugs, we
have decided to use images of our favorite actors instead.
Richard's is Philip Seymour Hoffman. Jacob's is Al Pacino.
Mine is Sean Connery. And in many strange ways, which you will
eventually have to decipher for yourself, those personality pairings are
extremely appropriate and accurate.
