| Worst Director
I made a concerted effort to see the films that had received the most
negative press this year. Among these films, I paid close attention to
the various aspects of the film including directing. The following five
directors received my endorsement for nomination for this year's Razzie
awards:
- Uwe Boll, Alone in the Dark: Really, truly, did I have any
choice here? I still haven't checked out the Razzie archive to see if
Boll has previously won, but undoubtedly "Alone in the Dark" is simply
an awful film. Much of the blame for this fact rests solely upon the
choices of director Uwe Boll.
- John Asher, Dirty Love: He's the former partner of Jenny
McCarthy, and the director of her self-penned flick, "Dirty Love."
Watching this film explains why the relationship didn't work, and why
neither Asher or McCarthy have much of a career anymore. Everything
about "Dirty Love" is awful, from the acting to the script to the
pacing to the production design to nearly every awful choice Asher
makes here.
- Jay Chandrasekhar, The Dukes of Hazzard: This film didn't
have to be much to be considered successful, and it's one of the few
Razzie contenders to actually do decent box-office. One has to
question the directing skills of a man who can't even get Jessica
Simpson to shake her butt in a sexy way. This film made me cringe as I
relived the worst moments of Burt Reynolds' career and watched a
campy, fun TV series turned into a series of awkward, condescending
attempts at humor.
- Karen Kusama, Aeon Flux: She apparently had a conversation
with Pitof about how to direct an Oscar winner in an action flick.
Even worse, she apparently listened to what he had to say. This film
is dreadful.
- Lawrence Gutterman, Son of the Mask: Gutterman takes the
approach of throwing everything possible into the film, but the
hilarious result is that virtually none of it works. Not even my
absolute love for Traylor Howard can allow me to show any mercy here
(other than the fact that I did NOT nominate her in the Worst Actress
category, a definite act of mercy on my part).
- HONORABLE MENTIONS: I gave serious thought to a Spielberg
nomination for "War of the Worlds," an unforgivable waste of talent,
money, and production. Ultimately, Spielberg redeemed himself with my
#1 film of the year, "Munich." I also came close with Rob Cohen, for
this year's dreadful "Stealth," an excessive, silly, and badly acted
piece of fluff featuring last year's Best Actor Jamie Foxx. Michael
Bay has gotten much buzz as a possible contender, which I actually
consider a huge mistake. He's just made what may be his best film with
"The Island," and appears headed in the right direction. I fear the
combination of poor box-office coupled with a Razzie nomination will
only lead to his return to the formulaic eye-candy that made millions
for him.
