No gushing here...just the basic reasons why I like TC Candler and why
you should too. |
| |
TC Candler is a witty,
engaging, thrill-ride of an individual. He is also sarcastic,
occasionally venomous and always brutally honest.
And thank God for all of that.
You can always tell a TC review. It’s intelligent, fun to read and can
range from a joyous expression of ecstasy to a scathing indictment of
cinematic evil. The fact that he is just as comfortable tearing a film
to pieces as he is exalting is a key to the personality of TC.
I have never met TC in person. I have spoken to him and have exchanged
countless e-mails, but I have never seen him in person. That’s why it is
odd that I feel like I know him. So many people use the internet to hide
behind words…to talk to others but mask their personal views for risk of
offending someone. Such a prospect would certainly offend TC, who is no
stranger to controversy and the hatred of many. He has no problem
letting you know what he thinks on any issue. He has no problem letting
you know what he thinks is funny. He never seems to be missing a piece
of himself when he writes, like so many people do. He is himself at all
times.
I’m certain he has received just as many e-mails informing him that he
“sux annd is a stooped fuk” as he has received compliments on his
articulation and intelligence. Not that TC would take any of those
former messages to heart. He’s too smart to let idiots bother him.
I don’t want this to become a suck-up, brown nose, kiss ass moment, so
I’ll say this: I do not always agree with TC. I think he’s too tough on
family films and summer blockbusters. I think he’s too tough on science
fiction, horror and fantasy. And as I have seen on
www.everyonesacritic.net, he can be stubborn and does not even tolerate
the most innocent of fools gladly.
However, I have never doubted in my mind his reasoning behind everything
he says. How exactly his mind manages to process what it does is beyond
my comprehension. If you have a question about anything he has ever
said, he has a response. And if you aren’t an ignorant dumbass, he’s one
of the most helpful and kindest people I have ever come into contact
with. He has no shortage of wit, humor, and if you’re the current
president, scorn. He is incredibly human and a genuine romantic...a rare
thing in this world where most of the populace is made up of people like
me.
As a critic, TC is invaluable. It’s not enough for a film to be
entertaining…it must truly mean something. These high standards are
honorable to say the very least. If TC gives one of my “A” films a “B,”
I always consider my rating and wonder if he saw something I didn’t or
if my lack of experience is getting in the way. His words are that
powerful.
That’s TC in a basic nutshell. Someday I hope to learn more about him,
but despite the hindrance of having yet to meet face to face, I count
him among my friends. In the meantime, I’m content reading his reviews,
exchanging e-mails and opinions, and, of course, debating.
The photo of Sean Connery is
used above because on this site, rather than using our own ugly mugs, we
have decided to use images of our favorite actors instead.
TC's is Sean Connery. Richard's is Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Mine is Al Pacino. And in many strange ways, which you will
eventually have to decipher for yourself, those personality pairings are
extremely appropriate and accurate.
